DESCRIPTION:Landscape designer Paul Bangay has an extraordinary ability to envisage scale and create gardens that feel as though they’ve been there forever. These gardens are places to explore. They emerge from the countryside\, with borrowed landscapes and dramatic views as key elements. Within each design\, Paul creates spaces that bring a different experience of the garden. Vast lawns are bordered by wild grass terraces or dramatic herbaceous borders that flower all year round. From grand gardens in France to a forest grown from saplings\, join Paul on this tour de force of projects complete with lakes\, mountains and walled gardens. For each project\, Paul shares the design process\, as well as garden plans and extensive planting lists. \nPaul will be in conversation with journalist\, podcaster and Sorrento Writers Festival founder and director\, Corrie Perkin. SUMMARY:Public Lecture - Smart Fertilisers: Fertile ground for sustainable agriculture
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 School of Chemistry Public Lecture \nModern farming practices require nitrogen fertilisers\, and their use is projected to increase by 70-100% by 2050. Unfortunately\, approximately 50% of nitrogen fertilisers applied to agricultural systems is lost into the environment. These losses are not only expensive for farmers and consumers but\, more importantly\, the environmental impact is substantial: ammonia in nitrogen fertilisers is a precursor for particulate matter (PM2.5)\, while nitrate leaching causes excessive surface water eutrophication and groundwater pollution. Microbial processes also play a role\, converting nitrogen fertiliser into gases including nitrous oxide\, which has 300 times higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide. Thus\, to lower the greenhouse gas footprint of agriculture\, reduction of nitrogen losses has become an important goal. This seminar will present a selection of strategies to improve nitrogen management in soils to increase agriculture’s sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:We are very excited about The Australian Native Plants Society (Australia) Biennial Conference\, which will take place September 30th to October 4th 2024. The five-day conference has a broad theme of “Gardens for life” and will cover such topics as gardens for wildlife\, conservation of rare species through cultivation\, gardens for beauty\, for our cities and for our health. There will be two days of excursions and three days of excellent presentations and workshops. \nOur committee is narrowing down a fine list of speakers and presenters and we have decided on three five-day bus tours – Wilson’s Promontory and Gippsland\, the Otway Coast and South West Victoria and the Grampians (Gariwerd) and The Little Desert. These will be exceptional wildflower tours with expert guides.

DESCRIPTION:Each year\, our Bush Crew conducts annual Eltham Copper Butterfly larvae counts as part of their ongoing responsibility to monitor this population of endangered invertebrates and would like volunteer help to survey on of the populations in Greensborough. \nWith the increasing threat of urbanisation\, it is more critical than ever to record population numbers of threatened indiginous species. Guided by our passionate Bushland staff\, we will be setting out under torch light to locate and record the larvae of this unique species. \nLarvae counts are conducted in the dark as this is when they emerge to feed on the sweet bursaria leaves. This is an opportunity for the community to help a significant species for the area and contribute to ongoing understanding of this important population. \nWhat to bring\nPlease wear enclosed footwear and bring a torch or headlamp and weather appropriate clothing. \nThis event will not be held on high wind or rainy nights. You will be notified of a cancelation in this case well in advance of the event. \nBook your spot by email
