SUMMARY:Public lecture: Enabling the DER revolution - from dynamic pricing to virtual power plants\, energy communities\, and microgrids
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Energy Institute invites you to the sixth MEInetwork seminar for 2024\, presented by Professor Pierluigi Mancarella\, MEI’s Energy Systems Program Leader\, Chair Professor of Electrical Power Systems at the University of Melbourne\, and Professor of Smart Energy Systems at the University of Manchester\, UK.\nMEInewtork24 Seminar #6 – Enabling the DER revolution – from dynamic pricing to virtual power plants\, energy communities\, and microgrids\nMaking the demand side more active and flexible is considered the Holy Grail to enable integration of renewable energy into power systems and markets and whole-system decarbonisation. In this regard\, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) embedded in distribution networks are becoming widespread in most countries worldwide. In Australia\, in particular\, household-level consumer energy resources (CERs) such as rooftop solar photovoltaics\, battery energy storage systems\, electric heat pumps\, and soon electric vehicles too\, are poised to play an essential role towards net-zero targets and more consumer-centric system developments. Local energy systems with shared assets such as community storage are also emerging as important options of interest. Key ongoing debates now refer to how different distributed technologies and schemes should be fully integrated into power and energy systems and markets. \nIn this lecture we will present fundamental techno-economic aspects of key approaches that could enable large-scale deployment of DERs and CERs – from dynamic pricing to virtual power plants\, energy communities\, and microgrids – and discuss the benefits of demand side integration into systems and markets. Several case studies from recent projects in Australia and internationally will be used to exemplify the concepts presented.

SUMMARY:Public lecture: Recent developments in U.S. climate policy
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Energy Institute invites you to a public lecture by Dr Karl Hausker of the World Resources Institute\, who will discuss the recent developments in U.S. climate policy.\nPassage of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) was a major step forward for the U.S. on the path to meeting its NDC target for 2030 under the climate treaty\, and toward its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The IRA addresses emissions in nearly all sectors of the economy and provides incentives for carbon dioxide removal. \nThis lecture will: \n\nplace the IRA in context given the history of U.S. climate policy;\nassess progress in its implementation; and\nexplore implementation challenges expected in the decade ahead.\n\nTopics will include the impact of the 2024 elections\, surging electricity demand\, large buyer interest in nuclear and other clean/firm power\, and debates over U.S. fossil fuel production and exports. \nThis event is an in-person only event.

This is an opportunity for the community to help a significant species for the area and contribute to ongoing understanding of this important population. \nWhat to bring\nPlease wear enclosed footwear and bring a torch or headlamp and weather appropriate clothing. \nThis event will not be held on high wind or rainy nights. SUMMARY:Public lecture - The tale of the sunflower and its travels in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:The sunflower\, a vibrant and essential part of global cuisine\, holds a unique place in Ukraine’s cultural and historical landscape. Today\, sunflower oil is a staple in local and regional kitchen\, and the flower’s bright imagery is deeply woven into the nation’s cultural fabric. Yet\, many might be surprised to learn that the sunflower\, known as soniashnyk in Ukrainian\, is not native to the local forest-steppe and steppe lands. First cultivated by Indigenous peoples in the Americas\, sunflowers were introduced to Europe\, then to the Russian Empire\, and eventually became one of the most common crops in Ukraine. The sunflower has thrived in Eastern Europe\, evolving into a cornerstone of Ukraine’s economy as the country has emerged as the world’s leading exporter of sunflower seeds and oil. \nWhile the sunflower is a cherished icon in Ukrainian literature and art and a popular symbol of resilience\, its environmental impact has not received the critical attention it deserves\, particularly regarding its role in soil degradation and the spread of monoculture farming. This lecture will delve into the complex history of sunflowers within Ukraine’s economic\, cultural\, and environmental landscapes. By examining this agricultural plant as a source of food\, cultural significance\, and national wealth\, the talk will illuminate the intricate relationship between sunflowers\, Ukraine’s history\, and its land. \nThe Mykola Zerov Fellowship in Ukrainian Studies is generously funded by the Ukrainian Studies Support Fund of the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria (AUV). \nLight refreshments will be served prior to the lecture.
