DESCRIPTION:Dive into gardening at Yarra Seed Library! Attend monthly workshops to share seeds and nurture plants in our library planters\, or donate your own seeds anytime during opening hours. SUMMARY:2024 Conference of the Ecological Society of Australia (ESA2024)
DESCRIPTION:The conference will showcase the science of ecology in Australia – across all its varied forms – and be an opportunity to explore the connection between science theory\, science research\, science policy and science on-ground outcomes. We look forward to seeing you at ESA 2024 to connect\, share and inspire ecologists and those that use our work. \nWe invite you to Naarm (Melbourne)\, on the traditional lands of the Kulin Nation\, for ESA 2024. Learning about how nature works includes identifying fundamental driving processes\, characterising important interactions\, and communicating those discoveries effectively. This is how ecology advances\, providing stories that engage and explain nature to a lay audience\, as well as underpinning applications of our science to ecological problems with practitioners on-ground. Never has it been more important to do good science to understand ecological systems and to provide the evidence that supports sound environmental policies and effective conservation and management. \n

SUMMARY:Movie – Follow the Rain
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased via the conference registration site. \nIn one of the wettest years on record in Australia\, photographer Stephen Axford and filmmaker Catherine Marciniak followed in the path of the rain to document the fungi that emerged. Their mission – to discover why scientists now think life on earth as we know it\, would not exist without fungi. It is an exploration of the world of fungi like you have never seen it – combining a decade of research\, passion\, Stephen and Catherine’s exquisite fungi time-lapses and footage\, and the most incredible fungi stories. It is a pioneering fungi safari with breath-taking imagery while unearthing the foundation of life down under. Other characters include mycologists Dr Tom May\, Dr Camille Truong\, Prof Roger Shivas and Prof Teresa Lebel. \n

SUMMARY:Soil contamination and safety in urban areas - Spotlight on Soil Master Class
DESCRIPTION:Starting a garden to grow your own food is exciting\, but how can you ensure your soil is safe? It’s not just lead you need to worry about—arsenic\, cadmium\, copper\, manganese\, and other contaminants can also pose risks. In addition\, different plants absorb these chemicals at varying rates\, so understanding your soil and the plants you grow is key. In this one-hour Master Class\, delivered by Alistair Kirkpatrick we’ll cover: \n\nHistory of soil contamination in Melbourne\, the why\, when and how. The sources and impacts are relevant to other cities\nPhytoremediation as a sustainable solution to soil contamination\nTechniques for growing food in contaminated soils other than phyto-remediation including how to properly collect soil samples for testing; what to do with test results and strategies for managing contamination and how plant choice affects chemical absorption and risk levels;\n\nThe session will conclude with a group session where the participants are given a list of 5 edible plants that have been discussed and they need to work out the best way to grow these plants in contaminated soils based upon the discussion. \nBy the end of this session\, you’ll have the knowledge to assess and manage soil safety\, ensuring your food-growing efforts are both healthy and sustainable. \nThis session is the first in a series called “Focus on Soil”. Other topics include Soil Compaction; Overview of soil health and role of fungi; Microbes and Minerals – Book the Series Package for discount. Friends of SGA receive a 15% discount on Master Class full price tickets. You can become a Friend of SGA here. Green Garden Professional (GGPs) receive a 30% discount.

SUMMARY:Restoring Healthy Soils
DESCRIPTION:Event description\n\nSave time and money in the garden by shoring up the foundations: soil. In this workshop Craig Castree reveals some key fundamentals to restoring healthy soils including the magic of humus and importance of microbial activity. While soil might not be the typical topic of conversation\, it’s time it became a priority. His new book\, Soil is Not A Dirty Word goes beyond just sounding the alarm\, it offers a solution after solution to the problems most of us never knew we had with soil. We’ll take a regenerative approach that revitalises the soil\, reduces reliance on chemical inputs\, and restores its nutrient density. Castree’s strategies promise to revolutionise edible gardening\, farming\, and growing food plants. \nPlease feel free to bring any surplus produce\, seeds\, cuttings\, plants\, gardening magazines etc to swap and share! \n  \nPlease note that this is an event for Naarm/Melbourne gardeners only. If you live outside this area\, please contact your council to find out what free sustainable gardening events are available locally. \nThis session will be hosted at the Maribyrnong Edible Gardens inside the Raleigh Road Activity Centre. The centre is wheelchair accessible\, including accessible bathrooms. The garden has uneven ground. If you have any access or support questions or requirements in order to participate fully (eg. interpreter)\, please let us know at least two weeks prior to the event and we will be pleased to assist you. Photos will be taken at this event\, but there is an option to opt out on the day. \nThis My Smart Garden event is proudly presented by Maribyrnong City Council on the land of Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong of the Kulin nation.
