DESCRIPTION:Whether it’s a La Niña year this year or not\, drought is set to be more the rule not the exception in the future. In the city we can still grow much of our own food through water efficient planning and gardening. Topics covered in this session include garden design for shelter from hot sun and winds\, tank solutions\, how to water at the right times\, irrigation systems\, working with slopes\, greywater systems\, water-hardy plants\, and some innovative water saving solutions such as wicking beds. Covers the basics of everything you need to know to grow abundant healthy food while minimising water use. \nThis event is being run in partnership with Braybrook Community Hub. \nThursday 14 November\, 10am-12pm. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Inspired Living Series and National Recycling Week\, Nina Gbor and fellow panel members will discuss sustainable fashion in a circular economy at the Manningham Function Centre. \nNina Gbor: \nNina is a sustainable fashion educator\, international speaker\, sustainability consultant\, and Founder of Eco Styles. Nina is also the Director of the Circular Economy and Waste Program at The Australia Institute and has been featured on the ABC’s War on Waste. Nina will talk about her journey into sustainable fashion and discuss the collaborative effort needed to address sustainability challenges in the fashion industry. \nDanielle Kent: \nDanielle is the General Manager\, Industry Transformation at Seamless. Seamless is a clothing stewardship scheme that aims to transform how clothing is made\, used\, reused and recycled in Australia to create clothing circularity by 2030. Danielle has been lead on the design and development of Seamless with a Consortium of organisations and the Australian Fashion Council. She has extensive experience in strategy and complex change management as a consultant\, and a full range of government experience at state and federal level. \nCourtney Holm: \nCourtney is a circular fashion systems designer\, thought leader and entrepreneur. She founded experimental circular fashion label A.BCH in 2017 and built it into a world leading example of what circular fashion could aspire to. In early 2024\, she made a strategic decision to step away from making new clothes in order to focus on industry wide solutions. Courtney is the founder and CEO of Circular Sourcing – a climate tech platform turning surplus textile waste into resource. Courtney’s expertise is in circular design for clothing\, material flows and circular systems design. The heart of her practice is industry transformation for sustainable and equitable futures. \nInspired Living Series – keynote speaker events\nThe Inspired Living Series – keynote speaker events showcases five insightful\, not-to-be-missed evenings at the iconic Manningham Function Centre. \nThe series will introduce you to a diverse line-up of local and international keynote speakers offering unique insights on how we can all shift to a greener future. \nTopics range from permaculture to sustainable fashion. DESCRIPTION:Event description\n\nSow and Tell: Writing the Garden \nGardens are rich and fertile places for writers. They are places of uncertainty\, where things stir under the surface and we are not sure what will emerge. They are places of creativity and vitality\, where new life blooms. Gardens hold their own stories too\, and listening to these stories can inspire our own. \nCome enjoy some slow time observing and writing in the NECCHI Wayi Garden with me. We will ground ourselves in this special place and open our senses to it. I will share a few writing tips\, read you evocative pieces of garden writing\, and offer some prompts to inspire new writing from you. No writing experience is necessary. You can write in any form: poems\, stories\, essays\, fragments\, journal entries\, or stream-of-consciousness ramblings. We will attend to our inner and outer landscapes and see what takes root. \n  \nAbout Simone \nSimone King (she/her) is a poet\, editor and PhD student in creative writing who lives and writes on Wurundjeri Country. Simone’s poems and reviews have been published in poetry anthologies and journals including Best of Australian Poems 2022\, Australian Poetry Anthology 2024\, Rabbit Poetry\, Cordite\, Plumwood Mountain\, and Mascara Literary Review’s Resilience Anthology. Simone won the 2022 Blake Poetry Prize and the 2021 Woorilla Poetry Prize and has been highly commended for other literary awards. She coedited What we Carry: Poetry on Childbearing\, Recent Work Press\, 2021. \n  \n\nSow and Tell: Writing the Garden is a family-friendly workshop that will take place within NECCHi’s Wayi Community Garden.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for three hours of activities designed to connect you to nature and enhance your health and wellbeing. \n\n\n\n\n\nYou may encounter an Eastern Barred Bandicoot\, Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby\, Rufous Bettong\, Eastern Bettong or maybe even an Eastern Quoll. These species are self-sustaining and co-existing across the landscape. Group sizes are capped to ensure everyone has a great experience. The tour takes approximately 1.5-2 hours depending on the wildlife you encounter. \nTix: $50 adults\, $35 children under 17 years\, children under 5 years are free. Bookings essential. \nWhat to bring: Water and any light snacks you are likely to need. Wear weather appropriate clothing with enclosed sturdy footwear. You are welcome to bring torches and cameras (flash is OK). \nNote: Smoking is not permitted on the tour. \nTour Cancellations: Tours at Mt Rothwell are run – rain\, hail or shine. However\, we reserve the right to cancel a tour at short notice due to severe weather conditions for public safety reasons (e.g. dangerous winds\, predicted lightning strikes). It’s not just lead you need to worry about—arsenic\, cadmium\, copper\, manganese\, and other contaminants can also pose risks. In addition\, different plants absorb these chemicals at varying rates\, so understanding your soil and the plants you grow is key. In this one-hour Master Class\, delivered by Alistair Kirkpatrick we’ll cover: \n\nHistory of soil contamination in Melbourne\, the why\, when and how. The sources and impacts are relevant to other cities\nPhytoremediation as a sustainable solution to soil contamination\nTechniques for growing food in contaminated soils other than phyto-remediation including how to properly collect soil samples for testing; what to do with test results and strategies for managing contamination and how plant choice affects chemical absorption and risk levels;\n\nThe session will conclude with a group session where the participants are given a list of 5 edible plants that have been discussed and they need to work out the best way to grow these plants in contaminated soils based upon the discussion. \nBy the end of this session\, you’ll have the knowledge to assess and manage soil safety\, ensuring your food-growing efforts are both healthy and sustainable. \nThis session is the first in a series called “Focus on Soil”.
