They are places of uncertainty\, where things stir under the surface and we are not sure what will emerge. They are places of creativity and vitality\, where new life blooms. Gardens hold their own stories too\, and listening to these stories can inspire our own. \nCome enjoy some slow time observing and writing in the NECCHI Wayi Garden with me. We will ground ourselves in this special place and open our senses to it. I will share a few writing tips\, read you evocative pieces of garden writing\, and offer some prompts to inspire new writing from you. No writing experience is necessary. You can write in any form: poems\, stories\, essays\, fragments\, journal entries\, or stream-of-consciousness ramblings. We will attend to our inner and outer landscapes and see what takes root. \n  \nAbout Simone \nSimone King (she/her) is a poet\, editor and PhD student in creative writing who lives and writes on Wurundjeri Country. Simone’s poems and reviews have been published in poetry anthologies and journals including Best of Australian Poems 2022\, Australian Poetry Anthology 2024\, Rabbit Poetry\, Cordite\, Plumwood Mountain\, and Mascara Literary Review’s Resilience Anthology. Simone won the 2022 Blake Poetry Prize and the 2021 Woorilla Poetry Prize and has been highly commended for other literary awards. She coedited What we Carry: Poetry on Childbearing\, Recent Work Press\, 2021. \n  \n\nSow and Tell: Writing the Garden is a family-friendly workshop that will take place within NECCHi’s Wayi Community Garden.

DESCRIPTION:Event description\n\nCome and learn about native wildflower meadows with Katherine Horsfall whose research in grasslands restoration at the University of Melbourne has lead to planting millions of native seeds to create nurturing\, inspiring\, biologically and culturally important grassy floral wonderlands in small urban spaces. These include threatened indigenous species. \nWe will meet at our Newlands house public gardens where we are re-introducing grasslands species of the volcanic plains. We will look at what’s in flower\, Katherine will help with plant identification and talk about meadow gardening. \nYou will also have the opportunity to sow a mini meadow. Take the mini meadow home and put it in a sunny sheltered spot and wait and watch – you never know what you’re going to get! Please bring a pot of approximately 9L – at least as wide as a dinner plate (25 cm) and deeper than 10 cm. It doesn’t need to be fancy\, recycled is great! \nPlanting more indigenous wildflowers can be an important act of reparation. They also offer more food for the native insects that have co-evolved with those plants.

It was mown for years\, but that stopped in 2019 and now it’s bursting with a range of native wonders\, including Critically Endangered Spiny Rice-flower\, Kangaroo Grass and Lemon Beauty Heads. It was burnt last year\, so we’re looking forward to a great show this year. A fine example of how resilient our grasslands are. \nLater the same day\, we’re going to the Jolly’s Grassland out in Parwan\, near Bacchus Marsh. It’s a stunning privately owned grassland. DESCRIPTION:Four varied and exciting gardens are open free to the public. Join us for a day exploring the old and the new\, the large and the small\, the native and the exotic. Presented by Waverley Garden Club in conjunction with the City of Monash. \n  \nFirst: \nMary’s Garden \, 777 Waverley Road Glen Waverley \nThis is a large established garden with a variety of camellias\, maples\, roses\, azaleas and\nhydrangeas\, a large lawn and several large shady trees. There has been a more recent planting of\nnative bird-attracting shrubs and three Wollemi pine trees\, purchased when they first became\ncommercially available.\nA new\, key feature of the garden is the conversion of a tennis court into an orchard with a very\nimpressive formal layout of gravel paths\, with a raised vegetable garden bed\, along with a large\nnumber of fruit trees\, including heritage apple varieties\, plums\, cherries\, figs and more\, as well as\na variety of berries. \nSecond: \nNick’s Garden\, 9 Blue Hills Avenue\, Mt Waverly \nNick’s unique front garden “Dreamtime\,” is a representation of Australia. Its Aboriginal focus\nincludes symbolic ceremonial\, boomerang\, rainbow serpent and billabong gardens. There is a\nsculpted rock Uluru\, the Murray River meanders tranquilly through a section\, and the nature strip\ncontinues the indigenous planting theme. Plant and flower colour is used to complement various\naspects and provide a variety of ‘bush tucker’ for the local fauna.\nThe back yard provides a range of native and exotic plants and there is a number of bonsai in\nvarious stages of development. There is also a small but productive vegie garden\, a fernery and a\nfire pit area. Large gum trees tower over the front and rear of the property providing a micro-\nclimate and cover for a vast amount of birdlife throughout the year. \nThird: \nJack and Marie’s Garden\, 31 Rosaline Avenue\, Mt Waverly \nJack and Marie moved here in 2016 with the aim of downsizing to a sustainable small house and\ngarden. Karen Sutherland was engaged to establish a “permaculture forest’ of edible plants. Some\noriginal plants – roses\, a North American maple\, a Japanese maple and a hibiscus remain. Two\nplants were brought from the previous garden: a single hardy rhubarb that has produced\nvigorous offspring\, and a small bayleaf now as tall as a ship’s mast.\nThe remainder of the garden – replete with strawberry guavas\, feijoas\, a trio of hazelnuts\, a\nloquat\, a quartet of citrus trees and three raised vegetable beds – speaks for itself. First time\nvisitors are advised to look for the drive with the bed of strawberries in the middle!\nWarning: Bee hives on property. \nFourth \nAshwood High School Community Garden\,  50 Vannam Drive\, Mt Waverly \nThis large Community Garden was established in 2007 based on the permaculture model.\nThere are no individual plots\, with members working throughout the garden as tasks need to be\ncompleted.\nThere are several wicking beds\, bee hives\, hot and cold compost bins and a worm farm.\nVolunteers grow seasonal fruit and vegetables. There are more than 30 fruit trees with some\nunusual ones\, including yakon\, babaco\, avocado\, a rare Indian apple tree (no fruit yet)\, a\ncherimoya\, a white sapote\, plus many\, many more.\nVolunteers will be selling various seedlings including a wide variety of tomatoes unavailable\ncommercially.\nWarning: Bee hives on property. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Farm to Ferment: fermenting with farm fresh produce
DESCRIPTION:For aeons fermentation has allowed for the growth and creation of cultures around the world. It has beckoned in the gathering of community as an effective way to preserve abundant harvests all the while preventing mass food waste. Fermentation also allows for the development of complex flavours\, increased bioavailability\, and enhanced nutrition – the benefits are endless. We live in a society where food waste and in-access to nutritious food are some of the most impactful aspects of the current ecological crises we are faced with. There is a rumbling of curiosity in the action of reviving fermentation – (most) bacteria are our friends. In this workshop we foment that sense of intrigue and guide you through the basic principles of fruit and vegetable fermentation\, equipping you with a foundational skill set to alchemise plants at home. This workshop will act as a bubbly-beginning for the chance to utilise fermentation to vitalise connection and culture. \nIn this workshop you will learn the basics of fermenting soft and hard vegetables\, you will concoct your very own recipe and go home with two jars of delicious ferments. \nPlease bring 2 x 500g jars and a hat! Some jars will be available for purchase\, but reusing is preferred.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun adventure\, discovering the wonders of Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary on a nature orienteering expedition. \nNature based orienteering consists of a series of checkpoints hidden in the bush each with an activity to complete\, for example locating something or answering a nature-based question. \nParticipants are provided with a trail map and location of the checkpoints\, plus all the necessary equipment needed. \nThis event is open to all and suitable for families and while the sanctuary has well-maintained paths\, full access with walkers\, prams and wheelchairs may not be possible in all areas. \nSessions\nThere is a morning session and afternoon session\, both will cover the same information. DESCRIPTION:Event description\n\nAs summer heats up\, it’s time to create a lush\, abundant garden while keeping your water use (and bills) low by adapting to the changing climate! \nJoin us for a Water Smart workshop\, covering topics including garden design for shelter from sun and hot winds\, irrigation systems\, working with slopes\, greywater\, rainwater tanks\, drought-hardy edible plants\, and the wonders of wicking beds. \nSunday 10 November\n2pm–4pm\nMurrumbeena Community Garden\,\n117 Murrumbeena Rd\, Murrumbeena VIC 3163 \n———————————————————— \nPlease feel free to bring any surplus produce\, seeds\, cuttings\, plants\, gardening magazines etc to swap and share! \n  \nPlease note that this is an event for Naarm/Melbourne gardeners only. If you live outside this area\, please contact your council to find out what free sustainable gardening events are available locally. \nIf you have any access or support questions or requirements in order to participate fully (eg. interpreter)\, please let us know at least two weeks prior to the event and we will be pleased to assist you. Photos will be taken at this event\, but there is an option to opt out on the day. \nThis My Smart Garden event is proudly presented by Glen Eira City Council on the land of Boon Wurrung/Bunurong\, and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Kulin nation.
