SUMMARY:Public lecture - The tale of the sunflower and its travels in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:The sunflower\, a vibrant and essential part of global cuisine\, holds a unique place in Ukraine’s cultural and historical landscape. Today\, sunflower oil is a staple in local and regional kitchen\, and the flower’s bright imagery is deeply woven into the nation’s cultural fabric. Yet\, many might be surprised to learn that the sunflower\, known as soniashnyk in Ukrainian\, is not native to the local forest-steppe and steppe lands. First cultivated by Indigenous peoples in the Americas\, sunflowers were introduced to Europe\, then to the Russian Empire\, and eventually became one of the most common crops in Ukraine. The sunflower has thrived in Eastern Europe\, evolving into a cornerstone of Ukraine’s economy as the country has emerged as the world’s leading exporter of sunflower seeds and oil. \nWhile the sunflower is a cherished icon in Ukrainian literature and art and a popular symbol of resilience\, its environmental impact has not received the critical attention it deserves\, particularly regarding its role in soil degradation and the spread of monoculture farming. This lecture will delve into the complex history of sunflowers within Ukraine’s economic\, cultural\, and environmental landscapes. By examining this agricultural plant as a source of food\, cultural significance\, and national wealth\, the talk will illuminate the intricate relationship between sunflowers\, Ukraine’s history\, and its land. \nThe Mykola Zerov Fellowship in Ukrainian Studies is generously funded by the Ukrainian Studies Support Fund of the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria (AUV). \nLight refreshments will be served prior to the lecture.

DESCRIPTION:Each year\, our Bush Crew conducts annual Eltham Copper Butterfly larvae counts as part of their ongoing responsibility to monitor this population of endangered invertebrates and would like volunteer help to survey on of the populations in Greensborough. \nWith the increasing threat of urbanisation\, it is more critical than ever to record population numbers of threatened indiginous species. Guided by our passionate Bushland staff\, we will be setting out under torch light to locate and record the larvae of this unique species. \nLarvae counts are conducted in the dark as this is when they emerge to feed on the sweet bursaria leaves. This is an opportunity for the community to help a significant species for the area and contribute to ongoing understanding of this important population. \nWhat to bring\nPlease wear enclosed footwear and bring a torch or headlamp and weather appropriate clothing. \nThis event will not be held on high wind or rainy nights. They are places of uncertainty\, where things stir under the surface and we are not sure what will emerge. They are places of creativity and vitality\, where new life blooms. Gardens hold their own stories too\, and listening to these stories can inspire our own. \nCome enjoy some slow time observing and writing in the NECCHI Wayi Garden with me. We will ground ourselves in this special place and open our senses to it. I will share a few writing tips\, read you evocative pieces of garden writing\, and offer some prompts to inspire new writing from you. No writing experience is necessary. You can write in any form: poems\, stories\, essays\, fragments\, journal entries\, or stream-of-consciousness ramblings. We will attend to our inner and outer landscapes and see what takes root. \n  \nAbout Simone \nSimone King (she/her) is a poet\, editor and PhD student in creative writing who lives and writes on Wurundjeri Country. Simone’s poems and reviews have been published in poetry anthologies and journals including Best of Australian Poems 2022\, Australian Poetry Anthology 2024\, Rabbit Poetry\, Cordite\, Plumwood Mountain\, and Mascara Literary Review’s Resilience Anthology. Simone won the 2022 Blake Poetry Prize and the 2021 Woorilla Poetry Prize and has been highly commended for other literary awards. She coedited What we Carry: Poetry on Childbearing\, Recent Work Press\, 2021. \n  \n\nSow and Tell: Writing the Garden is a family-friendly workshop that will take place within NECCHi’s Wayi Community Garden.
