SUMMARY:Online: Bloom at Home: How to Grow Your Own Cut Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that flowers are flown in planes all around the world every single day\, contributing to significant carbon emissions? Despite the beauty they bring\, the majority of flowers for sale in shops around Australia are imported. However\, there’s a shift happening in the floral sector towards sustainability here in Australia\, so flowers are locally grown\, not flown. \nIn this one-hour Master Class session given by sustainable florist Lauren Parisi\, we’ll delve into the changing landscape of the floral industry and explore how you can grow your own arrangement-worthy flowers in your garden all year round. More importantly\, we’ll uncover how you could become part of a movement to relocalize the floral industry\, right in your own backyard. \nDuring this session\, you’ll explore ways to reduce your carbon footprint through gardening your own cut flowers. We’ll discuss: \n– Understanding the environmental impact of the floral industry\, including the carbon emissions and packaging involved in flower imports. \n– Recognizing shifts in the floral industry towards a ‘sow flower movement’ and distinguishing between imported and locally grown flowers. \n– Cultivating sustainable blooms for yourself\, with insights into selecting the right flowers\, along with practical tips and techniques for sustainable gardening\, adaptable to any season or climate. \n– Responsibly sharing your flowers with wildlife like birds and bees through mindful picking \n– Embracing the benefits of supporting local flower growers\, fostering relocalization efforts\, and contributing to a more sustainable and resilient floral industry within your community. \nThis session is one of four in a Masterclass Series “Carbon In Your Garden”. Other topics include – Growing Herbs and Teas\, Edible Weeds – The Most Carbon Saving Food\, Importance of Native Grasses in Your Garden.  Book the Series Package for discount.  Friends of SGA receive a 15% discount on Master Class full price tickets. You can become a Friend of SGA here. Green Garden Professional (GGPs) receive a 30% discount.
